Lincoln Center comes to SA Sunday
8 Oct 2010
Jack Fishman

In addition to the San Antonio Symphony's opening Classics series concerts on Friday and Saturday night, (featuring the Chopin Piano Concerto No. 2 and the wonderful pianist Jeffrey Swann) there is another big Classical music event in San Antonio this weekend. On Sunday, October 10 at 3:15 p.m. the San Antonio Chamber Music Society opens their season with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

The program features three great Quintets. While the first two pieces will be fabulous, it is the Brahms Clarinet Quintet that is NOT to be missed. I've heard clarinetist David Shifrin play chamber music and his tone is so ethereal, you don't even realize you are listening to a woodwind instrument. He is only one of two wind players to ever have been awarded the Avery Fisher Prize and he was the artistic director of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center from 1992 to 2004. Here is a brief video of Shifrin's playing a piece that combines the music of J.S. Bach and The Beatles.

Sunday, October 10, 3:15 p.m.
Temple Beth El, 211 Belknap Place

Mozart Viola Quintet, K. 614
Mendelssohn Viola Quintet, Op. 18
Brahms Clarinet Quintet, Op. 115

Ani Kavafian, Violin
Ida Kavafian, Violin
Mark Holloway, Viola

Nicholas Canellakis, Cello
David Shifrin, Clarinet
