Before his death in 1897, Johannes Brahms memorialized his cherished, fast-disappearing Old World in works of breathtaking tenderness and profundity. Moved by the serene purity of the clarinet, he created a quintet for the ages, a heart-rending epitaph for himself and the 19th century combined. Schubert’s similar Fantasie, composed in the autumn of his life, and Schumann’s emotional Dichterliebe build a nostalgic musical path to Brahms’s late masterpiece.
Presenter: Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center

The CMSD’s clarinet mini-festival concludes with the Detroit debut of a new trio featuring the renowned clarinetist David Shifrin, with pianist Anna Polonsky, and cellist Peter Wiley (former member of Beaux Arts Trio and Guarneri Quartet). Their much-anticipated concert includes the Brahms Clarinet Trio, alongside works by Debussy and Italian composer Nino Rota, who is best known for his film scores, including his Oscar-winning score to Coppola’s Godfather II.

David Shifrin is in constant demand as an orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber music collaborator, having worked frequently with such distinguished ensembles and artists as the Tokyo and Emerson Quartets, Wynton Marsalis, and pianists Emanuel Ax and André Watts. An artist member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 1989, David Shifrin served as its artistic director from 1992 to 2004, and has been Artistic Director of Chamber Music Northwest in Portland since 1981.

Russian-born pianist Anna Polonsky is widely in demand as a soloist and chamber musician, collaborating with the Guarneri, Orion and Shanghai Quartets, and with Mitsuko Uchida, Yo-Yo Ma, David Shifrin, Richard Goode, Emanuel Ax and Jaime Laredo. She has performed chamber music at the Marlboro, Chamber Music Northwest, Music@Menlo, Cartagena, Bard, and Caramoor Festivals as well as at Bargemusic in New York.

Cellist Peter Wiley attended the Curtis Institute at just 13 years of age and became principal cellist of the Cincinnati Symphony at age 20. From 1987 through 1998, Mr. Wiley was cellist of the Beaux Arts Trio, with which he performed over a thousand concerts, and then served as cellist of the Guarneri Quartet from 2001 – succeeding his teacher, David Soyer – until the quartet retired from the concert stage in 2009.

Burleigh was a star student of Dvorák at the National Conservatory in New York. Two generations later, Copland and Bernstein conceived a clean, clear American sound that conveys the wonder and awe of open spaces and endless possibilities.

A magical evocation of a Midwest farmland sunrise opens Dvorák’s “American” quintet, a work inspired by the plains of Spillville, Iowa, and the music of Native and African-Americans. This deeply moving work opened a vast musical horizon in the New World, pointing American composers in search of a voice to their own native musical heritage. Harry Burleigh, an African-American music student at New York’s National Conservatory, sang spirituals for Dvorák. The iconic Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein both drew on Dvorák’s game-changing vision to create their own American masterworks.
